Karey W. Gardner has been an attorney at the Health Law Firm since 2005. Ms. Gardner has represented physicians, nurses, clinics, hospitals, and nursing homes on issues pertaining to physician contracting, medical staff bylaws and rules, buy/sell agreements, employment discrimination, and licensing issues. Ms. Gardner also has substantial experience in regulatory and compliance issues pertaining to HIPAA, EMTALA, the Stark law, the federal anti-kickback statute, and the Arkansas Medicaid Fraud Act. Ms. Gardner has lectured on HIPAA compliance as well as medical staff development issues in Arkansas and in Texas. She is certified in risk management by MMI.
Before joining the Health Law Firm, Ms. Gardner served as the Director of Risk Management for the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, TX, where she was responsible for a comprehensive safety program covering an acute care hospital, rehabilitation hospital, ambulatory surgery center, PHO, and multiple outpatient clinics. While at CHRISTUS St. Michael, Ms. Gardner also served as the Manager of the Medical Staff Department, where she oversaw hospital credentialing and privileging activities and provided guidance in the development of various medical staff policies and procedures. Prior to CHRISTUS St. Michael, Ms. Gardner was the Risk Manager at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Ms. Gardner is a member of the Pulaski County, Arkansas, and American Bar Associations as well as the American Health Lawyers Association.
Ms. Gardner is a 1994 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law, where she was a class representative on the Student Honor Council.
In 2014, Ms. Gardner was voted as one of the Best Lawyers in Little Rock by the readers of Soiree and Arkansas Business in the category of Labor & Employment Law and was featured in the December 2014 issue of Soiree magazine.
Ms. Gardner has served as president of the North Little Rock Levy Chapter of the Arkansas Lions Club, and was president of the 431st Civil Affairs Battalion Family Readiness Group from 2007-2009. Ms. Gardner has also been a member and past president of the Catholic Risk Managers’ Forum and a member of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management.
